Jack Shear: Photographer and artist. Jack (AKA Spidermonkey) was a major creative force in my life.

He was completely responsible for introducing me to the concept of photography as ART. He would drag me to bookstores on Santa Monica Blvd. and overwhelm me with the early books of Arthur Tress and Duane Michals.

Jack worked for me over the years shooting movie stars for one of the magazines I designed. Our relationship was confusing and without definable boundaries, creatively that was great, but lacked an emotional foundation grounding us.

I got sober, and realized that our friendship, however it was defined was very dysfunctional and need boundaries, it is one of the few times I really needed Jack to honor a request. I learned the hard way it was to much to ask of him. We haven’t spoken in over 18 years, and it sure doesn’t look like we will anytime soon.

Jack made some odd decisions in his life, giving up his career in photography for domestic and financial security.

I have hundreds of images of Jack, but I guess looking back I found the definitive moment, the moment I first realized I had lost him as an artistic brother, at an Ellsworth Kelly show in NYC.

I have always hated minimalists, and with good reason.
